India adds 9.22 million wireless subscribers in July

All set to cross the 10 million mark

India has added 9.22 million wireless subscribers in July against 8.94 million in June, setting a new record, according to the telecom regulatory authority of India (TRAI), reports the Economic Times. According to TRAI, the subscriber base has reached 2.96.08 million in India.

This was the highest growth recorded within a 30-day period in any country, according to industry experts. Going by this trend in growth, India may soon cross the 10-million mark in subscriber-addition per month. On the whole, the teledensity in the country increased by 0.72% and reached 29.08% by the end of July 2008 compared with 28.33% in June.

The subscriber base in the wireline segment decreased by 0.16 million to reach 38.76 million in July 2008 compared with 38.92 million subscribers in June 2008. The wireless subscriber base increased by 9.22 million in July 2008 compared with 8.94 in June 2008. The total wireless subscriber base including global system for mobile (GSM), code division multiple access (CDMA) and fixed wireless local loop (WLL), touched 296.08 million by the end of July 2008.

The total broadband subscriber base reached 4.57 million by the end of July 2008 compared with 4.38 million by the end of June 2008. Bharti Airtel was ahead in July’s subscriber additions with 2.6 million new users reaching a total of 72 million, which showed an increase of 3.9 % from June 2008. The subscriber base of Reliance Communications increased by 1.7 million for the same period taking the subscriber base to 52.5 million by the end of July 2008. X
