By 2012, India will account for 20% of the world's Wimax users, with an estimated 27.5 million Indians using the technology.

The Department of Telecommunications of India, has been asked by the Wimax forum to allot the 2.3 and 2.5 GHz frequency bands, enabling 20 MHz blocks in both the bands. writes Debopriya Nandy.

According to the Wimax forum, the 700 MHz band can be supplemented for a mobile Internet service, and 3.4 MHz Wimax products are expected to launch by the end of 2008. Now it will be possible for people all over the country to access the Web, irrespective of region.

Leading telcos are ready to ship WIMAX products in India, using applications provided by the Wimax forum. With its labs in China, US, Spain, Korea, and two in Taiwan, the forum plans to open a lab in India later this year. X
