Indian daily wage earners to enjoy hi-tech banking

Banks to open mass accounts

By Subhankar Kundu @ Monday, July 07, 2008 8:00 AM

In order to make life easier for the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme’s (NREGA) workers, the Ministry of Rural Development has decided to enhance the payment mechanism of their wages by introducing telephone based banking services for these workers.

It is quite pointless though for those workers who do not carry mobile handsets, obviously.

This step has been taken by the ministry in the wake of safeguarding workers’ rights and checking irregularities in the payment of wages.

The Ministry of Finance on the request from the Ministry of Rural Development has ordered the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the banks to open the accounts for the NREGA wage earners which will get them smart cards for facilitating easy and effective disbursement of wages. X
