Indian firms no security risk, says Premji

Australian government agencies should drop barriers

By Examiner Staff @ Tuesday, June 10, 2008 9:55 AM

Australian federal government agencies are wrong to believe that outsourcing companies based in India are security risks, according to Wipro chairman Azim Premji.
Problems relating to security clearance and government concerns about holding sensitive data offshore have led to barriers against Indian firms, he said.
But speaking to Australian IT, Premji said that Indian companies should face no more barriers from federal agencies than other overseas companies such as IBM or EDS. He pointed out that IBM and Accenture had endorsed India by setting up operations in India, demonstrating that there was no need for customers to be overly cautious.
Premji admitted that Wipro was a relative newcomer in Australia and needed to build its brand, but promised the company would be “very strategic” in doing so. He said marketing efforts would be concentrated on specialised workshops and chief executive customer events. X
