Indian PM hacked for three months

Had a virus

By Nick Farrell in Rome @ Friday, March 20, 2009 7:15 AM

The email system of the Indian Prime Minster's Office (PMO) was hit by a computer virus for three months during 2008.

According to Spamfighter the damage to the system was not known and many emails sent to the PMP did not make it. It took three months to find the problem.

The incident was only made public when the Central Information Commission (CIC) conducted hearing session and the PMO submitted its grievance of the virus infection.

The CIC was complaining that there were discrepancies in the Hindi edition of Right to Information (RTI) act. The PMO said the reason was that several mails sent to the office didn't reach the Outlook Express and consequently, the Outlook Express was replaced with the Squirrel Mail.

We can see that they were going for high profile software in the PMO's office. However, for some reason the office did not spot that mails were going missing, nor did they bother with virus checks during that period.

Especially as the government has been complaining that Pakistan is hacking its computer systems, one would think that an occasional virus check would be a standard security precaution. X
