Nokia Siemens Networks has implemented the first GSM Railways (GSM-R) based signaling system in India as part of the Mobile Train Radio Communication (MTRC) project for North Central Railways. The future signalling and communication requirements of Indian Railways will be modeled on the basis of GSM-R.

Earlier, the railways employed communication techniques with a single streamlined digital radio system. The new system carries signalling and operational information directly connecting the moving train driver, guard and train controller on ground. This means higher speeds and greater intensity of traffic with better security and dependability.

Networks delivered an uninterrupted GSM-R radio system, with switching, base stations and controllers, cab radios and hand held devices. Communication happens between the train controller and the drive or guard even without the need to know mobile numbers or position of the train. Networks will also provide a wide range of services together with network design, installation and commissioning, project management, training, operations and maintenance, network integration and management for one year to make sure the system works properly.

Presently, Networks has implemented the solution on a 270 kilometre section between Mathura and Jhansi. The volume of traffic is projected to double by 2012. Indian Railways has made detailed plans to eliminate snags and improve efficiency to meet its requirements . X
