Intel boosts game performance

Another Larrabee tool pops up

By John Oram in California @ Monday, March 23, 2009 6:39 PM

On Monday at Game Developers Conference 2009, Intel released Graphics Performance Analyzers (GPA), a suite of software tools created in support of the Visual Adrenaline developer program. GPA helps PC game developers to analyze and optimize game performance on Intel Integrated Graphics.

Developers will find GPA as a part of the Visual Adrenaline programme, launched at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco in August 2008. There is also a handy quick reference tool at the website.

Game Developers Conference 2009, also held in San Francisco, claims to be the largest industry-only event dedicated to the advancement of interactive entertainment. This week the conference will feature more than 500 lectures, panels, tutorials and roundtable discussions covering all aspects of the game business.

Intel's vice president and general manager of Software Division, Elliot Garbus, said that game developers need simple, yet powerful tools which enable them to create games that look real, act real, and feel real. Garbus explained that GPA provides in-depth application analysis and customization so developers can pinpoint performance bottlenecks and optimize games for Intel-based desktop PCs and laptops that use Intel's chipsets.

ITExaminer sees GPA as another product to enhance the upcoming Larrabee GPU suite of graphical processors. Larrabee is rumoured to be a part of Intel's 32nm laptop offering which is expected to ship in late 2009 or early 2010.

Garbus said that GPA consists of three components: System Analyzer, Frame Analyzer, and the Software Development Kit (SDK). System Analyzer delivers high-level views of overall software performance. Frame Analyzer offers in-depth frame-by-frame performance analysis. The SDK enables developers to customize the suite according to their needs. He added that developers have the choice to run the tools locally or remotely through a network connection.

GPA is available now, free of charge to Visual Adrenaline members, and can be purchased by non-members for $299 through the Intel Business Exchange. X
