Intel can switch on your PC remotely

As long as it's not switched off

By Examiner Staff @ Thursday, August 14, 2008 6:34 AM

Chip giant Intel has created a technology called Remote Wake which will allow you to power up desktops at a distance, and grab the files you need.

The Remote Wake tech uses a specific chipset made by Intel and also needs software to work. And it won't work with PCs that are totally switched off, desktops need to be in either sleep or suspend mode.

The firm is working with a number of partners to implement the system, useful if you need a file or a picture and you're playing the 'road warrior' gig.

It might also be useful if you use your desktop to take telephone calls which you might otherwise never know about, although if you were a real macho road warrior, you'd never let yourself get in that situation. X
