Intel CPUs may be vulnerable to attack

Regardless of operating system

By Andrew Thomas @ Tuesday, July 15, 2008 7:32 AM

A computer insecurity boffin plans to demonstrate how errata in microprocessors can be exploited by hackers, regardless of the operating system in use.

Kris Kaspersky, who doesn't work for Kaspersky Labs, says he will show proof of concept at a conference in Malaysia in October. He claims that anyone with a knowledge of Java compilers should be able to exploit flaws in Intel chips to carry out denial of service attacks or run malicious Javascript code.

Intel provides fixes for processor errata in BIOS and driver updates, but Kaspersky claims many users never implement them, leaving their machines vulnerable to attack.

Intel says it will investigate the claims. X
