Bells of celebration are ringing out across Chipzilla, as the chip giant, Intel, completes 40 years of operation this Friday. And any time now, the world will learn who is to take over at the helm of the company.
Paul Otellini will retire soon, under Intel rules. Known for his dynamic and - some say - arrogant attitude, he has worked for Intel from the start of his professional career in 1974. Since then, he has managed numerous Intel businesses that include the company’s PC and server microprocessor division. He became a part of Intel’s board of directors in 2002, and was promoted to president and chief operating officer. Focusing particularly on energy-efficient products, he replaced Craig Barrett as CEO in 2005.
There is no doubt that Otellini has helped Intel reach new heights, but will his successor be dynamic enough to keep it up? Industry experts are tipping Sean Maloney to replace him, becoming Intel’s sixth CEO. Maloney, who joined Intel in 1982, at present is executive vice president of Intel Corporation, general manager of the Sales and Marketing Group, and chief sales and marketing officer.
The chip company isn't giving anything away, with a spokesperson commenting: “We’ve not made any announcements regarding this. We will keep you posted as and when we do”. It's hard to believe, though, that a decision has not yet been made. X
