| | Intel's profits soar as laptop sales continue - Chips with everything By Examiner Staff @ Wednesday, July 16, 2008 4:51 PM
Section - PCs/Chips | | | | Chip giant Intel reported revenues of $9.5 billion for its second financial quarter, turning in net profits of $1.61 billion on gross margins of 55.4%. Its net profit for the quarter was up by 27% with the firm attributing strong sales of notebook CPUs and chipsets in the quarter.
Sales of notebook CPUs exceeded sales of desktop CPUs, a sign of the switch away from the beige boxes of yesteryear. Intel must be hoping that sales of its future 'Atom' microprocessors don't cannibalise sales of its notebook CPUs - the Atom chips are designed for mobile devices but with cut down features.
Intel is bullish about its third quarter - it expects to turn in a gross margin of 58% and revenues between $10 billion and $10.6 billion.
Despite the good quarter, Intel said the quarter showed 'significantly lower' NOR flash revenue. Intel is 40 this Friday, but even though grey is showing on its temples, it appears to be in the prime of life. After all, life begins at 40 and 40 is the new 30, right? X
