| | Iphone drought hits India - Thirsty gadget heads left gasping by government delays By Subhankar Kundu @ Friday, July 11, 2008 12:35 PM
Section - Telecoms/Mobile | | | | Apple has come to the 3G global market with a bang as it launches its new 3G Iphone in 22 countries, but Indian Iphone enthusiasts have to wait till the Government gives the green light to the 3G spectrum which should happen any day now.
The Indian Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has taken a tough stance on 3G after its long battle with Telecom Regulatory of India (TRAI) over the auction of 3G spectrum and licenses. TRAI opposed DoT’s decision to involve foreign companies as it wants only existing players to make a bid for the 3G spectrum.
The Indian telcos are also geared up for 3G as the two major operators - Airtel and Vodafone - have already started the process of modifying their websites to allow users to pre-register for the 3G Iphone. Vodafone and Airtel will be the main players, as Apple is set to enter into a non-exclusive agreement with them.
Phone makers expect shoppers to flock to stores for the new generation phone and availability could be a problem when the Iphone finally goes on sale. X | |
