IPTV players worry over high channel pricing

Waiting for big players to arrive

By Harsha Pramod @ Monday, August 25, 2008 10:30 AM

Internet protocol television (IPTV) services in India is affected by the high channel pricing by broadcasters, reports the Economic Times.

IPTV companies say that the launch could be affected by the absence of competitive prices. The Union government passed the policy framework for IPTV and also revised the downlinking guidelines for the TV channels to facilitate the launch of the service.

According to IPTV companies such as Time Broadband and Aksh Optifibre, broadcasters are demanding a high price for providing content. Telecom companies such as BSNL and MTNL has requested the telecom regulatory authority of India (TRAI) to fix prices for IPTV services along the lines of direct-to-home (DTH) services. TRAI had maintained that IPTV companies would get rates similar to that of DTH. The industry is also unhappy about TRAI directives not being strictly followed.

IPTV players think that the entry of telecom giants such as Bharti and Reliance would benefit them. However, content providers maintain that they are following TRAI’s recommendations and have signed agreements with telecom companies. X
