Locals hold 90% of Maharashtra jobs

Companies already complying with directive

Maharashtra government records show that 91 per cent of the people employed by micro, small and medium industries are locals.

Locals account for 91 per cent of the non-supervisory jobs and 97 per cent of the supervisory positions in these industries. Among large-scale industries, more than 88 per cent of the employees in the nonsupervisory category and 78.7 per cent in supervisory posts are locals.

The government had dug up a 1968 resolution asking all industries, including small, medium and large enterprises to employ at least 50 per cent locals in managerial jobs and 80 per cent in other categories. However, these statistics speak for themselves. State industries minister Ashok Chavan explained that the government did not want to harass industries and that they would not be forced to adhere to the resolution guidelines.

However, he maintained that companies, which did not adhere to the guidelines, would lose their incentives. X
