Marvell plans expansion

Aims to take onĀ Freescale

Marvell Technology has been talking to IT Examiner about its future at the Embedded Systems Conference in Bangalore.

After acquiring Intel’s communications and application processor business almost two years back, Marvell has been riding high. The acquisition provided the chipmaker with a strong presence in the growing market segment for the processors used in smart handheld devices.

Like so many other companies, Marvell is currently pushing its "green" credentials. Senior marketing manager Ajay Matani, who recently moved from the US to India, gave the Examiner an overview of its low-power, high-integration, 65 nanometer, MV 78200 and MV 78100, a dual-core, highly integrated system-on-chip (SoC) featuring Marvell’s Sheeva CPU technology. MV 78200 is a complete server appliance, unlike Intel’s Atom.

The company has a strong presence in networking, printing, telecom and the video surveillance sector, and is number two chipset supplier to the telecom industry.“We are sole supplier of integrated chips inside Blackberry, Samsung hi-tech phones, and even Apple Iphone”, said Anand Ramamoorthy, head of mobile cellular operations. India will soon witness the launch of two Indian handsets with embedded Marvell chipsets, said Ramamoorthy, although he declined to name them.

The chip maker is eyeing India with great interest and plans expansion in the next 12 months. Matani said, "Bangalore will be our main office for expansion, as we plan to improve our sales." The company at present has two offices in India - in Pune and Bangalore - with 120 and 132 employees respectively. However, the expansion in Bangalore may not open the doors for more employment, since Marvell plans to start its sales improvement by hooking up with partners to leverage their support.

The company is also set to take on Freescale, and believes that the competition will take the company to new heights.

Marvell, over the last few years, has made remarkable progress in development of storage, communications and consumer silicon solutions.  Its diverse product portfolio includes switching, transceiver, communications controller, wireless, and storage solutions that power the entire communications infrastructure, including enterprise, metro, home, and storage networking.
