McAfee buys Secure Computing

Network security unit to get a boost

By John Daly in Germany @ Monday, September 22, 2008 3:39 PM

Maker of antivirus software and firewalls McAfee says it is going to buy network security company Secure Computing in a deal which will cost $465 million. McAfee grandly declared that buying Secure Computing will help it sell a complete portfolio of network security software and services to small and medium-sized businesses and stonking big corporations. Secure Computing will become part of McAfee's network security unit, that is if the stockholders give the deal their thumbs up.

"We expect the pending combination of McAfee and Secure Computing will create an annual projected combined revenue of just under $500 million in the network security segment of our SRM portfolio. We believe that this pending acquisition will allow us to immediately establish a leading and highly competitive position in the network security space," said McAfee CEO Dave DeWalt.

McAfee went on to say the takeover would make it one of the biggest businesses in network security. Apart from that, the merged companies will be able to hawk anything under the sun security-wise, making it a one-stop shop. Secure Computing currently has over 22,000 customers around the globe which McAfee also seems happy to scoop up and add. X
