The newly-created Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) plans to build a world class city, reported the News Post India. Gurgaon city, located near Delhi, is known for its flourishing IT industry.

The new civic body hopes to bring in revenue worth millions from taxes from commercial properties such as malls and corporate buildings. The revenue will be used for further development.

The private builders, who have developed numerous private colonies such as DLF City, Palam Vihar, South City and Sushant Lok, were reportedly against the formation of the civic body as it would prevent them from billing residents for maintenance charges.

Before the formation of the MCG, private builders could not be charged house taxes. Now, with nearly 1.3 million people living in the area, the MCG will receive a significant sum in the form of house tax. However, people living in their own homes will be excempted from house taxes. Owners will be charged at different rates for renting out residential and commercial properties.

MCG has requested budgetary support from the Haryana state government ,and has already got close to Rs 1 billion($2.3m) collected by the Panchayats after the elimination of the Panchayat system.

The MCG has liaised with the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), the Town and Country Planning (TCP) Department and the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) to ensure planned and sustainable development in Gurgaon. X
