| | Microsoft sued over encryption software - Vista and Windows XP in the frame, geddit?!? By C Shanti @ Wednesday, July 16, 2008 10:52 AM
Section - PCs/Software | | | | A case started in a district court in Texas with a firm accusing Microsoft of appropriating its encryption technology.
MAZ Technologies, a Delaware firm, accuses Microsoft of misappropriating a US patent - 6,185,681 - called Method of Transparent Encryption and Decryption for an Electronic Document Management System. The patent was granted on February 6th, 2001.
MAZ said the US Patent Office demanded a re-examination of this patent, and then issued one on May 23rd, 2006. And then US patent 7,096,358, called Encrypting File System was issued to one Stephen Zizzi - a good name in Scrabble, if only it were a noun rather than a proper name and there were three zeds (US, zees) in a regular Scrabble kit.
Now MAZ alleges the Vole (Microsoft) has infringed the patent in Windows OSes including Windows XP Professional and all versions of Microsoft Vista.
MAZ wants damages, it said in its filing. X
