Mitac is planning to launch its first GPS-enabled 3G handset later this year, according to sources in the company.

The 3G handset will be built using the Qualcomm handset platform, and will compete with Garmin's Nuvifone 3G handset, which is earmarked for the US market around the same time.

Mitac has been getting interested in GPS handsets lately. It has already released a GPS-enabled handset, the Leap K1, in Taiwan. It plans another one, the Leap G50, to be released at Computex 2008.

According to Digitimes, Mitac has announced details of five Moov-series PNDs which will be in the shops any day now.

These are the Moov 330,350 and 370 which will have a 4.3-inch display, as well as the Moov 200 and 210, which will come with a 3.5-inch display.

Mitac has been having a rough time of it lately. Sales of its PND products were largely ignored during the first half of the year. The company shipped about 2.4 million PND products in the first half of the year, which is less than 20 per cent of last year's figure. X
