Motorola has deployed a Wimax trial network in Vietnam.
The new network will allow Vietnam Datacommunications to begin testing next-generation wireless broadband services in major cities, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Motorola is also expected to install a number of Wimax diversity points and over 100 customer premises equipment units.
"Launching the trial network for Vietnam Datacommunications Company is another milestone in Motorola's long history of leading Wimax development in the industry," said Dr Ray Owen, head of Technology for Asia and general director of Motorola Vietnam. "The Wimax trial further strengthens our relationship with VDC and offers more choices of broadband access to its subscribers."
It should be noted that Vietnam's burgeoning IT sector has attracted the attention of Japanese IT firms seeking a potential outsourcing hub. The Asian island currently shifts 17 per cent of its outsourcing projects to Vietnam, generating approximately ¥10-15 billion ($101-152 million) per year. Hoang Le Minh, a high-ranking government official, confirmed that the country planned to increase its outsourcing capabilities. Minh also noted that the industry was worth a lucrative $3.58 billion in 2007.
Sun Microsystems and BT Frontline have also opened a joint office in Hanoi. According to Steve Ting, the company's IT services will allow local and global businesses to "harness the power of technology to enhance their business operations and processes". The joint venture will reportedly offer a variety of software and hardware solutions, including Solaris, Java, MySQL and storage options. X
