War-scarred Mozambique is to get its own factory turning out 100 PCs a day.
The factory has been constructed following a partnership between the Mozambican government's Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (MICTI) and the South African Company, Sahara computers.
According to the Mozambican News Agency, AIM, an older factory is getting a face lift at the end of which all the necessary gear will be installed.
The country wants to improve its computer industry and Jamo Macanze, has been appointed to the task.
He believes that by building PC's locally he can boost the IT economy. The factory will build about 100 PCs a day, depending on demand.
It will not make components and these will have to be imported. Macanze is trying to get the government to waive import taxes on PC components to keep the prices down.
He said that studies had shown that the conditions were favourable for the development of a computer industry in the country.
