Myanmar bolsters IT sector

Installs Yangon Wifi network

By Aharon Etengoff in San Francisco @ Wednesday, November 12, 2008 5:02 AM

Myanmar has announced plans to install a Wifi network in Yangon.

The government is also in the process of establishing public internet access centres in all its cities. Over 40 PACs are already in operation across the nation.

Mynamar has taken a number of significant steps to bolster its nascent IT sector in an effort to meet the standards of the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI). Indeed, Yadanabon Myothit Cyber City, the country's first ICT park, recently opened in Pyin Oo Lwin. The city, which sprawls over 10,000 acres, produces a variety of software and hardware solutions. At least 35 local and foreign IT companies have expressed interest in constructing additional facilities, prompting authorities to allocate an extra 372 acres (150 hectares) of land.

The country has also signed a series of ICT development MOUs with a number of Asian countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, China and South Korea.

In October, Mynamar held its 10th annual Information and Communication Technology exhibition. At least 60 companies demonstrated their wares, while conference organisers presented a series of lectures and seminars.
