Italian electronics maker and owner of a defunct website Mywave has entered into a licensing agreement with US owner of all sorts of mobile network related patents Qualcomm. Qualcomm is being very friendly to Mywave and is giving the company a worldwide license so it can make and sell modem cards and modules based on both WCDMA and TD-SCDMA nivuke standards. Royalties paid are in line with Qualcomm's standard fees.
The licensing agreement comes nearly a week after reports of Shanghai Potevio striking a deal with Mywave. Both companies agreed on rolling out a trial network based on Chinese 3G mobile standard TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access). The standard was developed by Siemens and the Chinese Academy of Telecommunications Technology. TD-SCDMA is in parts based on CDMA, which means Mywave is probably playing it safe by shelling out royalties to Qualcomm so it won't face getting dragged to court. This PDF features a nice overview on page 26.
'This license agreement to Qualcomm's patented technologies, the key innovations driving 3G CDMA, provides MYWAVE with the ability to fulfill consumer demand for mobility and high-speed data access,' claimed Mywave's manager Corrado Martuscelli, secretly wishing he could save on royalties. X |
