Navy gets supercomputer

Yo ho ho and a bottle of teraflops

By Dave Murray @ Thursday, July 10, 2008 3:20 PM

The US Naval Oceanographic Office Major Shared Resource Centre  has just bought an  IBM Power 575 Hydro-Cluster supercomputer.
According to a press release, the machine will have a peak speed of 90 teraflops making it one of the most powerful systems in the US Department of Defence.

Dave Turek, vice president of deep computing for IBM said that the Power 575 supercomputer was designed for the type of computationally intensive work undertaken by NAVO.

It will apparently provide detailed oceanographic modelling and weather forecasting that will help keep the naval fleet and commercial shippers out of harm's way. The Power 575 Hydro-Cluster is powered by Power6 microprocessors and is, amusingly, water-cooled. X
