Section - Business/Financials | | | | IBM is making big investment plans for computer-chip manufacturing and research in New York State, creating 1,000 jobs at its East Fishkill research and manufacturing facilities.
Governor David Paterson has confirmed that the state will provide $140 million from its economic development grants, including $1.5 billion from IBM.
The plan clearly indicates IBM's intention to expand its reach by investing more on semiconductor research and development. The alliance is aimed at meeting the increasing challenges of producing future semiconductor chips with 45nm, 32nm and smaller geometries, and to develop the required complementary advanced packaging technologies.
The investment will also provide for the expansion of IBM’s operations at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the University at Albany and the upgrading of its East Fishkill facility.
Paterson claimed New York held the position of global leader in nanotechnology, and said the partnership with IBM will act as a channel for the development of other high-tech businesses in New York. X
