No layoffs in India, says AMD

R&D just too important

AMD's Indian employees can rest easy, as the company has no plans to follow up layoffs in the US with similar cuts in India.

At a CEO conclave organised by Bangalore IT Biz, IT Examiner caught up with AMD India managing director, Dasaradha Gude. We asked him to throw some light on the future of AMD India.

Gude said, "This is a global impact of economic slowdown, and AMD hopes to come back hard. It will affect India as well, but we are also at the hiring spree." He added, "There are no such plans to have similar lay-offs in India. We focus highly on research and development in India."

 The struggling chip maker recently decided to show pink slips to as many as 500 workers in the US. Earlier, it got rid of 1,600 employees, including its chief executive. The decision was taken as a part of a major restructuring process aimed at controlling costs.

The chip maker has been struggling over the past couple of years, recording a loss of $5.6 million over the last eight financial quarters. X
