Finnish mobile handset maker Nokia and IBM have announced that Nokia smartphones will be able to access IBM Lotus Notes corporate email from next month. The added feature comes amidst Nokia’s dwindling share in the smartphone market, due to the popularity of Iphones and Blackberrys.
Nokia in an official statement said the new software can be used by more than 80 million of its smartphone user, which will give them access to IBM’s Lotus email. The company has signed a similar deal with Microsoft that enabled access to outlook express, Microsoft’s corporate email on Nokia smartphones.
Facing fierce challenge from RIM’s Blackberry, Nokia stopped the development of its own corporate email product this year and choose to look for partners instead. The company believes the move will help in focusing more on the development of business phones.
This month, research firm Canalys reported a drastic fall in Nokia’s smartphone share to Apple and RIM. In order to restore its position the Finnish company had unveiled a tailored version of its E71, Nokia 63. X
