A Norway consumer agency plans to sue Apple, for limiting the compatibility of music downloaded from Itunes store to Apple’s Ipod.
Norwegian customer, Ombudsman Bjoern Erik Thon, said Itunes had not met its demands to change its digital rights management (DRM) system to make its music compatible for all music players and not just I-pods.
Thon said, Apple needs to make their Itune services interoperable so that one can play music bought on iTunes on other devices, including mobile phones, reports Reuters. A consumer’s freedom of choice in the online music is an important right, he added.
Discussion over the past two years with Itunes has led to some improvements in the contract terms for downloading music, but the one of the biggest glitch that is non-availability of Itunes music on devices other than Ipod’s is yet to be addressed.
Thon’s office, which is an independent government agency, hopes other countries would follow Norwegian example and file their own cases against Apple. His next step is to gather a number of countries to support this case, although this case will be brought in front of the Norwegian Market Council and handled according to Norwegian law. X
