Notebook demand falls - report

Bad news for PC industry

By Examiner Staff @ Friday, May 30, 2008 8:34 AM

Goldman Sachs has released a report suggesting that there will be a decline in notebook shipments in the second quarter of this year.

According to the Taipei Times, the five biggest ODMs (original design manufacturers) had hoped growth would be 7.6 percent during the quarter, but the actual figure is likely to be more like 5.5 percent.

ODMs produce designs which multinationals like HP and Dell then brand with their own characteristics. The big five ODMs are Compal, Wistron, Asustek, Inventec and Quanta.

It's a slow period for notebook sales anyway - growth in the third quarter is expected to be closer to 20%, the report said. The shipment figures have not been helped by Intel delaying its Montevina chipset and associated processors. X
