Japanese mobile phone carrier NTT Docomo is to offer improved videos and custom services as the outfit suffers intense competition.
The move is interesting because NTT Docomo is at the forefront of mobile broadband changes for some years now, and what it tests usually finds its way to the west in a couple of years.
The company recently downgraded its forecast for the year to March after suffering slower sales.
Docomo said it will focus on new services and technologies rather than try to win new subscribers in Japan. It seems that much of this R&D will be focused on getting videos suited to users' tastes, in addition to offering regular entertainment videos.
Acceleration of the network speed, evolution of mobile handsets, and a flat-fee structure should mean that NTT Docomo can push high-volume movie content without worrying users about payment.
It wants to see its faster infrastructure made into a de facto international standard. X
