Obama's mobile hacked by Verizon

Employees saw phone numbers

By Nick Farrell in Rome @ Friday, November 21, 2008 9:25 AM

Verizon employees hacked Barack Obama's mobile phone billing records during the presidential campaign, according to CNN.

The matter was noticed by Verizon Wireless representatives who warned Obama's transition team. The voice flip-phone with no email access is no longer active or being used by Obama.

Staff apparently accessed lists of phone numbers, and calls made by Obama could have been accessed.  No one heard any voicemail. Verizon Wireless said it has notified federal law enforcement authorities.

Verizon Wireless president and chief executive Lowell McAdam wrote in an internal company email that any employee who saw the phone list will be fired.

The implication was that some Verizon employees hoped to hand over such data to the McCain campaign.  It is not clear how the data theft was discovered, but it was only made public when McAdam's email was leaked to the press. X
