Oman Telecommunications (Omantel) and Middle East and North Africa Company (MENA) of Egypt have made a deal to fix a submarine fibre optics cable on the Omani coasts, to improve international telecommunications traffic.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Mohammed Bin Ali Al-Wohaibi, the Chief Executive Officer of Omantel and Dr. Nagi Anis, the Director of MENA Cable project. Wilayat Al Seeb will be the point of cable landing. Oman has become a popular landing point for global cable connections due to its favourable location at the crossroads of the Gulf, Middle East and Indian sub continent.
Dr. Al Wohaibi pointed that this partnership would exploit the capacities for submarine cables in in the Sultanate and enable alternate lines for international telecom network, upgradable transmission facilities supporting internet, e-commerce, video, data and voice. It will facilitate a range of communications up to 2.88 terabits, with dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) technology.
Al Wohaibi also reckons that the merger will make Omantel a hub of international telecom traffic, with MENA’s network of cable connections. He said that the company had signed a Europe-India Gateway project for the building of an international broadband fibre optics submarine cable, from the United Kingdom to India, which will also pass through Oman.
