Mobile phone application developers including Bharti Telesoft, Canvasm, Onmobile, Mauj Mobile and ADAG’s Jumpgames  have started working on business development, entertainment, and utility applications for Apple's Iphone 3G, launched on August 22.

According to Jagdish Mitra, CEO at Canvasm Technologies,  the applications are being developed with Indian subscribers in mind. Value Added Services (VAS) companies are to sell these applications through both the operators and Apple's application platform. Iphone subscribers are usually heavy data users, owing to features like the multi-touch interface, accelerometer, motion sensor and 3D graphics.

According to analysts, the operator's margin and Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) can be improved by applications. Canvasm is talking to major financial institutions in France about a mobile commerce application suite for the Iphone. A MMS client is to be released for the device by December, since Iphone does not support MMS, according to Manoranjan Mohapatra, CEO of Bharti Telesoft.

It seems the Iphone technology supports games best. Six Iphone games have already been launched by Gameloft and another eight are due out by December. X
