Salesforce has announced plans to offer cloud computing services in India.
Doug Farber, VP of Asia Pacific operations, told Reseller News that cloud computing was the next stage of SaaS (Software as a Service) as the company had at least 10 years experience in the sector. Farber also noted that numerous Indian firms had expressed interest in cloud computer during a San Francisco press conference.
In addition, the VP explained that Salesforce had managed to devise a method of bypassing India's infamous bandwith limitations by utilising an "offline PDA" that synchronises when the device is online. According to Farber, Salesforce was prepared to focus its marketing efforts on certain geographic "pockets," including Hyderabad, Bangalore, Gurgaon and Mumbai.
A number of other firms offer competing cloud computing services, including Amazon and IBM. Big Blue is currently testing a newly developed cloud computing platform, codenamed Project Yun. Yun is capable of automatically allocating storage, server and network resources for clients. The Wang Fu Jing Department Store, considered one of China's largest retailers, has already deployed several key cloud services from Project Yun, including a supply chain management solution for its vast network of retail stores.
"Cloud strategies need to be in line with business strategies," said Willy Chiu, an IBM VP. "Over the last year in our 13 cloud computing centers worldwide, we've worked with clients to understand how to help them take advantage of both public and private clouds to get the best economics." X
