Satyam eyes expansion in eastern Europe

Looks towards South America

By Peter Larsen @ Friday, October 10, 2008 4:55 AM

Satyam Computers is considering expanding its operations in Europe and South America.

"We have a presence in Sao Paulo (in Brazil), but we would like to enter that market in a big way. Eastern Europe is also a region to look for," said Chairman B Ramalinga Raju.

The company currently maintains a number of offices in North America and operates a development centre in Hungary.

Satyam is also hoping to increase European sales in an effort to reduce its dependency on the US. As such, it is bidding for large contracts on the continent and focusing on generating new business from existing customers such as European Aeronautic Defence and Space. In addition, the company is competing for deals in the French telecommunications industry.

As IT Examiner previously reported, the firm has accelerated its efforts to acquire major international businesses due to the fall of US banks and mortgage firms. Despite the economic slowdown, Satyam managed to generate approximately $10 million (Rs 48.97 crore) in revenue during the first quarter of the fiscal year '09. Nevertheless, shares have lost over 40 per cent of their value during last four months. The company, which has a surplus of over Rs 7,000 crore, is slated to evaluate all possibilities that could add value to shareholders.  X
