Software tracks stolen mobile phones

And even makes the thief pay

By Jayant Mishra in Mumbai @ Tuesday, October 07, 2008 9:50 AM

We all know how painful it gets when your cell phone gets lifted. Having had two phones stolen, an Indian techie has come up with an answer - a product that secures your device as well as its data in case of theft.

Founder of Maverick Mobile, Sujit Jain,  has introduced software that lets owners track stolen mobile telephones. The company got a rave review for the software at a recent DEMO gathering of 72 startups in Southern California.

The software installs in the hardware of mobile telephones, not in the changeable SIM cards that identify users to telecom service providers. The application runs in an unseen hidden mode in mobile telephones, encrypting contact numbers and other data, in case the burglar puts a new SIM card in the handset.

The software is also capable of retrieving contact lists from the stolen device and sends the new SIM card number and location data to a device designated by the original owner. The application also sends copies of all the numbers the thief has called and copies of text messages he or she may send. And it’s all sent using the new data plan, so the best part is that the thief pays for it, Jain said.

Mobile owners with this software have the power to disable stolen mobile telephones or make them play loud alarms that only stop when the batteries are removed. Replacing a battery reinitiates the irritating sound.

The secure software was given “Demogod” award as one of the top launches at the Southern California event. X
