Sony plans to release what it has dubbed the world's thinnest and lightest 40-inch liquid crystal display (LCD) television in time for Christmas.
The new ZX1 model, part of the firm's popular Bravia series, is just 9.9 millimetres and weighs 12.2 kilograms.
It can be hung on a wall like a framed painting because comes with a fast wireless connection, the screen display is separated from the tuner so it does not need signal cables. Of course it still needs power so it is not completely plug free. It will not be at the bottom end of the market it will be sold for $4,500 US dollars in Japan.
Sony has also released three other new series of Bravia LCD televisions with screen sizes ranging from 40 to 55 inches. Takao Yoshikawa, Sony's director of flat TV business division was quoted by AP as saying that demand for displays at 40 inches or larger as demand for them is on the rise. This will be news to many analysts, and Sony's own accounts department, which has said that the smart money is in the smaller screens. X
