Terror communicated via satellite phones

Karachi calling

By Jayant Mishra in Mumbai @ Tuesday, December 02, 2008 10:24 AM

The recent attacks in Mumbai were coordinated using satellite phones - hardly surprising, seeing the way terrorists have embraced the usage of hi-tech technology over recent years.

The terrorist involved in the carnage used satellite phones to communicate with his superiors in Karachi, once again highlighting the way the devices can be misused.

The reason for counting on satellite phones rather than any other GSM or CDMA is because the frequency used by can't be jammed, and nor can it be tapped easily by Indian security agencies.

With each terror attack, the world sees terrorists becoming ever more sophisticated, high-tech and lethal. The recent Mumbai mayhem demonstrates this, with the handful of gunmen in the city relying on Google Maps, GPS locaters and satellite phones as much as arms and ammunition.

A satellite phone or satphone is a type of mobile phone that connects to orbiting satellites instead of terrestrial cell sites. Depending on the architecture of a particular system, coverage may include the entire Earth, or only specific regions. X
