Terrorists used Gmail ID to claim responsibility

For Mumbai atrocities

By Subhankar Kundu @ Friday, November 28, 2008 3:37 PM

Mumbai was in a state of terror from late Wednesday night. It was 1:26 AM on Thursday morning when the first terror mail reached a Hindi news channel’s office.  Never heard of before, a new terrorist outfit called ‘Deccan Mujahideen’ claimed the responsibility.

The cyber crime cop from Ahmedabad, Sunny Vaghela spoke to IT Examiner on the developments in the investigation. Vaghela is the one who first helped Mumbai police to acquire the log information.

Vaghela said, “The mail has been traced to Russia but we are trying to find out the information from the proxy server. The proxy server has been used to send this e-mail. Right now, I am trying to contact Russia. Already, I have contacted one Russian hacker. He told me that his computer has already been hacked, board no. 108 was being used for sending the mail”.

He further added, “The Mumbai police is delicately investigating but I am in touch with them. I got them the log information. Actually, the mail was sent using a Gmail Id – deccanmujahideen@gmail.com. So, we will have to ask the login information from them”.

He said that the e-mail was written in Arabic. It’s not in Proper hindi language”. Excerpts of the two- page e-mail (translated) read:

“We today warn the Indian government to stop the repeated injustice on Muslims and it should return the states snatched from Muslims. But we know that Indian government would not take this warning seriously".

“That is why we have decided that warning will not just remain a warning, we would ensure that it is proved true, an example of which you have seen in Mumbai”.

“Now we will keep on reacting till the time we don’t take revenge of every atrocity on us, every insult to us”.

The email also did not raise the 2002 Gujarat riots to justify the attacks as it did in earlier mails recently after attacks on other big cities.

The language used in the mail makes it difficult to get the right message. It is not pure Hindi either.
Some Hindi words are written in roman script.

The prefix ‘Deccan’ has created more mystery around the identity of  the terrorists.

The Maharashtra major general, R K Hooda said, “Going by the messages intercepted by us, this terrorist is speaking in Punjabi language. He insisted that he belongs to Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh but the truth will come out after the interrogation of the arrested terrorists”.

Vaghela said, “I met Hyderabad cyber cops yesterday and am in close contacts with them”. He is now keeping his fingers crossed on the outcome of this - yet another terror e-mail mystery but suspect a definite Pakistan link. X
