The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is again in the news for its stand against any plan to allow international majors to take part in the auction for third generation (3G) spectrum, reported the Economic Times.
TRAI has sent another message to the department of telecommunications (DoT) cautioning them against their decision. TRAI had earlier recommended that only existing service providers should be eligible to bid on 3G spectrum. However, DoT has allowed both Indian and foreign companies to take part in the auction even if they did not possess licenses to offer telecom services.
Nripendra Misra, chairman of TRAI has conveyed to Siddharth Behura, the DoT secretary that allowing foreign players would give them an entry to offer 2G services in India. 2G cellular networks are presently used by all mobile services in India. X
