US politician claims Chinese hack

Shutting the door after the horse has bolted

By Dave Murray @ Thursday, June 12, 2008 11:43 PM

A US politician claims that his computer network was compromised in 2006 by Chinese hackers.

Representative Frank Wolf, of Virginia, said he was introducing a resolution calling for more protection of sensitive computer networks in view of the incident, which he said is probably not isolated.

Quite why Wolf was so keen to jump on the Cyber espionage bandwagon nearly two years after he was hacked has never been revealed.

He claimed that the Chinese were sniffing around his office looking for all the information his staff had collected about political dissidents and human rights activists around the world.

Wolf said computers in the offices of several other members were similarly compromised, as well as a major committee of the House -- the Foreign Affairs Committee.

House Information Resources and FBI officials immediately pointed the finger at China.

Wolf said that cyber attacks permitted the source to probe our computers to evaluate our system's defences, and to view and copy information.

While his computers were 'cleaned' he remained deeply concerned that this institution is not adequately aware of or protected from these types of threats.

China, of course denied hacking Wolf's PC. It pointed out that the US had a nasty habit of going around and telling the world that it was hacking anything that moved.

A spokesman urged the US to stop being so paranoid and do more that mutually benefits bilateral ties.

He said China lacked the technology to stage the sort of attacks that the US liked to blame them for. X
