User's voice could recharge cellphone battery

New technology enables self-powering device

A researcher has developed a new technology that would make self-powering handsets a reality, reports the Times of India.

The technology, based on the use of piezoelectrics, converts sound waves produced by the user into energy, allowing the battery to last without being charged. Tahir Cagin, professor in the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University, and his partners from the University of Houston have found that a specific piezoelectric material when manufactured at a very small size, in this case around 21 nanometers in thickness, can convert 100 per cent energy.

According to Cagin, materials made of a different size show significant differences in their energy-converting capacity. X
