A study inaugurated by telco giant Cisco said internet traffic will jump six times between now and 2012, with video the culprit and Youtube the chief villain.
Internet video only accounted for a measly five percent of traffic in 2005 but by the end of this year will represent 30% of traffic, according to the survey, reported in the Wall Street Journal.
The surge in traffic raises concerns for carriers like Cisco because ISPs are worried that data will act as a virtual plaque in Internet arteries, causing the Internet to fall over. The situation is exacerbated by the use of the Internet to carry phone data as well as vids.
The Cisco report appears to offer no answer to this question. Latin America, Asia Pacific and Western Europe are all showing considerable growth, the report said. X
