Intel plans to enable users to power up their computers remotely to retrieve documents and music files.
Chipzilla's Remote Wake Technology will be enabled on Intel motherboards and will facilitate computers waking up from sleep mode to answer incoming VoIP calls and allow remote access to live TV shows, webcam feeds, photos, videos and music, says Cyberlink, one of the first companies to exploit the technology.
RWT is an extension of Wake On LAN, which has been used by system administrators for years to control server farms remotely.
Intel stresses the energy-efficiency of the concept, which will allow a sleeping PC to wake up just long enough to send off the files its owner wants, then go back to sleep again.
RWT is expected to launch next week. X
