Wipro may be planning job cuts

Puts Indian IT-BPO industry into the danger zone

Wipro, which has recently been in the news for its not-so-impressive first quarter results, may soon make headlines for  laying off 3,500 employees.

A source told the Examiner that Wipro will soon be the latest company to join the “employee knock-off parade”. He said the company is planning to cut 3,500 jobs, with the decision made on performance criteria. The whole process will take almost a month.

When asked, Vaibhav Dalal, from Wipro's HR department, said: “I haven’t heard about it, so can’t comment.' However, his colleague Radha rubbished any such development. She laughed, as she said, “It’s not true at all, we have never done anything of this sort in our 60 years of business. Wipro is not thinking of downsizing.”

If the sources are to be believed, and giant Wipro is really planning to downsize, then it marks a danger signal for the Indian IT and BPO industry. X
