The Young Women's Christian Association and the Satyam Foundation have established a free IT school for underprivileged women in Chennai.

Satyam has provided 100 computers, relevant software and a number of instructors for the first three-month course. 20 women have already enrolled in the unique programme.

The Sahodri Project Madras and the Tamil Nadu State Social Welfare Board have also contributed to the IT institute. Audrey Dias, Task Force Member of Sahodari project, explained that the computer course would "empower women by enabling them to be self-sufficient."

According to Sheila Jayaprakash of the YWCA, the organisation previously arranged "servant work for women." However, the new course will offer the opportunity for "social empowerment."

As IT Examiner previously reported, Everonn Systems India has also kicked off an educational IT programme at the Gandhiniketan Ashram School in Tamil Nadu. The company will offer digitalised content and a number of interactive learning tools for students.

R Kannan, director of Everonn Systems India, explained that the corporate world needed to play a signifcant role in creating change. According to Kannan, the pilot initiative would supply 1,000 educational facilities in rural areas with "IT infrastructure, good quality content and an interactive medium for enhancing learning." X
